Revisiting Henderson's Past: Old Dick Fiddler

It's time for another peek into the archives ...

Old Dick Fiddler

From Paul Bunyan to Johnny Appleseed to Jesse James, American folklore has been a part of our national identity nearly since the foundation of our country. However, at a local level, Henderson’s own tales, legends, and folklore contribute to its communal distinctiveness, as well. As retold several years ago by the late Maralea Arnett in The Gleaner, the tale of Dick “Fiddler” is one of those oral traditions unique to Henderson.

According to the legend, Dick, a slave on the Henderson plantation in the early part of the 19th century, was known as Dick Fiddler because of his prodigious talent on the stringed instrument. In fact, Master Henderson, who knew that Dick was not his hardest worker, regarded him as a “necessary nuisance” to assuage his other slaves. One day, Dick was on his way to play at a wedding, a typical engagement for the musician, when he met up with a pack of wolves in the woods.

Fearing they would smell his angst, Dick dared not run, so he managed to stave off the hairy monsters by spasmodically dragging his fingers across the strings of his fiddle. The hissing cacophony kept the wolves at bay long enough for Dick to make his way up onto the rafters in a nearby cabin, but they soon followed and began snapping at Dick’s dangling legs. Then, Dick, in one final frantic effort, began to play “Yankee Doodle” for the pack. Apparently, this last-ditch, desperate measure appealed to the wolves, as Dick found that he had a captive audience. He continued playing song after song until the impatient wedding-goers came looking for their entertainment.

The moral of the story: “Even wolves are too fastidious to stand bad fiddling.”

To read Maralea Arnett’s article “Wolves and Fiddler’s hair-raising experience” or to read more about Henderson’s folklore, visit us upstairs in the library. Want to see what else we have? Visit us upstairs in the library, or view our webpage here.

Searching for classmates just got easier

It was Albert Einstein who once said “A photograph never grows old. You and I change, people change all through the months and years, but a photograph always remains the same.” We, at the library, are giving you the chance to look back on your memories through our high school annual collection. Search the yearbooks to see what you can find. You never know. You just might find that never-before seen picture of your mom doing “The Twist” or that psychedelic photo of your senior year ‘fro.

Don’t want to come all the way to the library to see if we have any of your favorite old annual photos? No problem. We have just developed an online index to these annuals that you can search from the comfort of your own home. Just enter your name or the name of an old friend or family member to look them up with ease. In addition, our new search feature allows you to select what databases you would like to search. You can search our annuals, obituaries, other indices, or all three.

While we don't have the photos or contents of the annuals posted on our website, you can view them anytime during regular library hours. A librarian would be happy to assist you. This is a project in progress which means that the index is still growing. If you don't see the school or year that you want to search, check back. We hope to have all of the Henderson high school annuals indexed in the near future. Click here to start your search today, or visit our genealogy webpage to learn more!

Note: Our high school annual collection is incomplete. The library would be grateful if you could donate annuals to fill the gaps. Click here to see a listing of missing years.

Revisiting Henderson's Past: Extraordinary Citizen

It's time for another peek into the archives ...

Darrell Posey: Hendersonian Extraordinaire

When Darrell Posey was a young Henderson County farm boy, his parents didn’t think much about the child’s seemingly special traits. He was extraordinarily curious, and he spent his time catching and studying insects and bugs of all kinds. Then again, those are just the sorts of things little boys do, right? Perhaps, but in Darrell’s case, he grew up to make a living of it, and quite a spectacular living, at that.

In high school, Darrell excelled in his studies, earning honors at national science fairs. He attended Louisiana State University, pursuing his undergraduate degree in entomology. These studies were what attracted him to some hands-on research in the Brazilian rainforests in 1977, where he lived for 14 months and acclimated to the folkways of the Kayapó natives. The young, blond Caucasian sharing fluent discussion in the elders’ councils may have seemed like something contrived by Hollywood producers, but the young Mr. Posey went on to earn his doctorate in anthropology and to later become one of the most internationally recognized anthropologists of his era.

To many, it is awe-inspiring to think of the little farm boy from Henderson County who grew up to receive the United Nations’ “Global 500 Roll of Honor” award for his work in fighting rainforest destruction and defending the rights of various South American indigenous tribes and to pave the way to impart to us of the sophisticated values of the cultures of “savage” peoples. Perhaps the moral of Dr. Posey’s life can be summed up in a few words he composed on one of his many quests, “Paddle, paddle, on we go; Till we can go no more. Lightning, strike at every stroke; Still we cannot give up hope.” Ever progressive, Dr. Posey never gave up hope on a better tomorrow.

Dr. Darrell Posey wrote 184 scholarly articles and eight books regarding his adventures with indigenous tribes. To read about his adventures in the Brazilian rainforests or to check out one of Dr. Posey’s books, come visit us at the library. Best-kept secret: Henderson Obituary Index

For the past 4 years the library has been quietly building an online service that has become valuable not only to Henderson County residents and businesses, but also to people across the country. Our local history librarians are recording every obituary printed in The Gleaner and making that information freely available and searchable from the library’s website. This is an enormous project that will take years to complete. The library has microfilm copies of The Gleaner dating back to 1880 and the goal is to record every obituary or death notice printed in each of those issues.

The index grows daily and today it includes 25,163 obituaries from 1986 to the present. Librarians are inputting data from the years 1983, 1984, and 1985. You can search by the decedent’s name, name of spouse, maiden name, names of survivors, date of death, place of death, and more. The obituary record will give you all of this information (if present in the obituary) along with the date that the obituary appeared in The Gleaner. In addition, any newspaper articles related to the death of an individual are listed in the obituary record (e.g. if the person was murdered, died in a car accident, etc.).

The library receives emails from across the country from genealogists who have searched the obituary index and found unknown relatives. Many times these researchers want to know if the library has any other information on their family members. Frequently the library will send copies of obituaries from The Gleaner to individuals (for a small fee). Our local residents use the service when they have forgotten or misplaced the death date of a friend, acquaintance or relative, or the names of the children of a friend who passed away. Local businesses also use the service to keep up with clients and customers. A local insurance company uses the service almost daily in the course of processing insurance applications and claims.

The obituary index is one of the library’s most used online services. To access it, go to http://www.hcpl.org/evanced/genealogy/obitview.asp or visit our Genealogy page.

Revisiting Henderson's Past: American Gangsters

It's time for another peek into the archives ...

Henderson: Home of an American Gangster

It was July 7, 1946, and the headline of the Sunday Gleaner and Journal read “2 Chicago Gangsters Nabbed in Henderson.” It is easy to imagine that the town’s residents were aghast as they read the story of the early Saturday morning FBI raids on Center Street and in the Weaverton district. The two men captured, George “Bugs” Moran and Virgil Summers, had lived as Hendersonians for several weeks, with none of the town’s citizens becoming wise to their true identities.

Born to Irish and Polish ancestry, Bugs Moran was a notorious mobster and bootlegger of the 1920s era of prohibition. One of the most illicit underbosses in Chicago’s northern outfit, his most renowned enemy was the disreputable Al Capone, who Moran saw as an unregenerate wrong-doer. After Moran’s involvement in the city’s 1929 gangland mass murder, Capone annihilated Moran’s gang in the nefarious St. Valentine’s Day massacre, shutting down the north-sider’s Chicago operations and forcing George Moran to turn to a life of pettier crime.

At noon on July 6, 1946 in Washington, D. C., FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover made the announcement that Moran, along with Summers, had been captured and charged with armed bank robbery. With the FBI tailing Bugs Moran and his family for weeks from Owensboro to Henderson, disguising themselves as neighbors and servants in nearby homes, they had made the arrest that morning in Henderson, disrupting the delinquent’s sleep and restoring Henderson’s well-being.

To learn more about George “Bugs” Moran, Virgil Summers, and their Henderson capture, come visit us upstairs in the library. As always, you can see what else we have by visiting our Genealogy and Local History webpage.

Revisiting Henderson's Past: The Hinterland

It's time for another peek into the archives ...

The Hinterland: Henderson’s Developing Frontier

Take a walk through downtown Henderson on a warm spring day. You may begin by the river, tranquilly pulsing with the motions of its rich blue waters. As you continue to historic Main Street near Central Park, you may take note of its blooming trees and abundance of fauna. By the time you reach Elm Street, you may notice the easy structural layout of the town’s streets.

What do you imagine Henderson was like in its frontier days over 200 years ago? According to the account of Samuel Hopkins, sent here in 1797 to survey and prepare the land for the Transylvania Company, the land, though wild and uncultivated, was not entirely unlike it is today, and though Hopkins encountered his share of agronomical and climatic complications, he had a positive and pioneering spirit. He writes in his report of the Red Banks (as Henderson was then known):

". . . in pursuing our course to the lower end of the town, we found ourselves within 50 feet of the first break of the bank. . . The descent is a fine sandy beach covered with a beautiful grove of trees. . . The fountains of water issuing from this bank are numerous and constant. . . The whole Town may be arranged into three classes – One third high and knobby – one third ridgy and dry – and one third nearly level. The last from the nature of the soil is wet and muddy from the fall of heavy rains, but not enough so, even the wettest, to prevent habitation with comfort."

Though it is likely that, upon first seeing the Red Banks, Hopkins foresaw the hard labour and months of planning that lay ahead of him, it appears evident that he also envisioned the opportunity in the land and the natural beauty of the would-be town.

Investing Tip: Ultimate Dividend Rules

Who wouldn't like a reliable and steady source of income without the inconvenience of working? It may be possible, when you invest wisely in dividend-paying stocks.

One of Morningstar's newsletter editors, Josh Peters, has just written a new book on dividend investing. The Ultimate Dividend Playbook will appear in bookstores nationwide this month. The following is an excerpt from Josh's book:

The Ultimate Dividend Rules

  • Capital gains are an unreliable source of income. If you need income from stocks, get it from dividends instead.
  • Dividends are the ultimate source of a stock's value for shareholders.
  • Current dividend yield plus dividend growth indicates a stock's future total return prospects.
  • Avoid stocks with unsafe dividends.
  • Past rates of dividend growth are a useful guide, but a forward-looking estimate is much more relevant.
  • The real world is unpredictable, so demand a margin of safety by requiring a higher total return prospect than you might otherwise settle for.
  • Start your portfolio planning with a target yield; then buy a group of stocks that, as a group, can deliver the income you seek.
  • Growing dividends are usually safer dividends as well. Within your target yield, seek as much growth as possible.
  • The more companies you evaluate before buying, the better your eventual portfolio will look and perform.
  • Consider selling when a stock's dividend no longer looks sustainable. Beyond that, let opportunity cost be your guide. Unless a new candidate offers a materially higher prospective return than the least attractive stock you already own, you should feel no need to trade.
