A great crowd turned out at noon today for the unveiling and dedication of the the
Great Horned Owls sculpture at the Henderson County Public Library. Among the crowd was a group of schoolchildren from Jefferson Elementary School. The sculpture, based on a painting by
John James Audubon and funded by the
Henderson County Public Library Foundation, is by Louisville artist Raymond Graf.
A reception following the ceremony was in the form of a birthday party for Audubon, whose

221st birthday was on April 26. The children enjoyed art and storytelling programs by Kim McGrew, an art educator from
Audubon State Park, and
Alan Gehret, curator of the Audubon Museum. Mr. Gehret came in both costume and character of John James Audubon and entertained the adults and children as he talked about the day he first saw the owl that he painted right here in Henderson County in 1814.
