Lucy Bakewell Audubon, wife of John James Audubon, was incredibly devoted to her husband. She made enormous sacrifices and suffered public scorn as she supported her husband’s talents. She was an advisor, teacher, and editor; she was also a saleswoman and business manager. Lucy became the main breadwinner as the couple spent time apart as John James Audubon dedicated his life to art and nature. Ultimately her intellect, loyalty and respectability helped John James Audubon publish Birds of America, often referred to as one of the greatest picture books ever produced.
