Unveiling of the Owls

A great crowd turned out at noon today for the unveiling and dedication of the the Great Horned Owls sculpture at the Henderson County Public Library. Among the crowd was a group of schoolchildren from Jefferson Elementary School. The sculpture, based on a painting by John James Audubon and funded by the Henderson County Public Library Foundation, is by Louisville artist Raymond Graf.

A reception following the ceremony was in the form of a birthday party for Audubon, whose 221st birthday was on April 26. The children enjoyed art and storytelling programs by Kim McGrew, an art educator from Audubon State Park, and Alan Gehret, curator of the Audubon Museum. Mr. Gehret came in both costume and character of John James Audubon and entertained the adults and children as he talked about the day he first saw the owl that he painted right here in Henderson County in 1814.

National TV-Turnoff Week

Why Turn off the TV?
Television cuts into family time, harms our children's ability to read and succeed in school, and contributes to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity. Here are just a few of the facts:

  1. On average, children in the US will spend more time in front of the television (1,023 hours) than in school this year (900 hours).
  2. Forty percent of Americans frequently or always watch television during dinner.
  3. As US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said at the Kick Off of TV-Turnoff Week 2001, "We are raising the most overweight generation of youngsters in American history...This week is about saving lives."

Millions of people all over the world have participated in TV-Turnoff Week since it began in 1995. Children and adults, rich and poor - people from every background and all walks of life - take part through schools, churches, or community groups, as families or individuals.

What's So Great about TV-Turnoff Week?
Turning off the television gives us a chance to think, read, create, and do. To connect with our families and engage in our communities. To turn off TV and turn on life.

Celebrate TV-Turnoff Week by stopping by the Library and checking out a book!

Audubon Bird Sculpture Dedication Ceremony

The Henderson County Public Library Foundation will host an unveiling and dedication ceremony of Henderson's newest Audubon Bird Sculpture at 12 noon, on Wednesday, April 26th, at the Washington Street entrance of the Library.

The latest Raymond Graf sculpture to grace the streets of Audubon's Kentucky Home will be the Great Horned Owl. This Audubon Print displays two of these large (21-25 inch) birds who are indigenous to the Henderson area and can still often be heard in the night. One of the owls in this print was actually drawn by Audubon in Henderson in 1813. The Library Board and the Library Foundation felt that this was a very appropriate "bird" for our Public Library. The owl has throughout history been the symbol of wisdom and inquisitiveness. A pair of wise old owls symbolize the Henderson County Public Library very well.

April 26, 2006, is the 221st birthday of John James Audubon. The Library Board and Library Foundation felt that this would be a great day to unveil yet another tribute to Henderson's most famous resident. The reception following the ceremony will be a birthday party for Audubon.

Pat McCormick will provide music for the festivities beginning at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will begin at 12 noon with the singing of the national Anthem by Betty Norment followed by My Old Kentucky Home which Mrs. Norment will lead the crowd in singing. The president of the Library Board, James J. Bates, Jr., will serve as the master of ceremonies for the formalities. Following the ceremony, the reception and children's activities will be held in the Library. The public is invited and it is hoped a large crowd will attend.

For further information, please contact Donald Wathen, 270-826-3712.
