Revisiting Henderson's Past: Pete Theis

It's time for another peek into the archives ...

Here’s to You, Lieutenant Theis

“Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings. . .”

from “High Flight,” a popular wartime poem by John G. Magee

The January 1, 1944, edition of the Henderson Morning Gleaner described Francis William “Pete” Theis as a “friendly and brilliant” young man. He was an entertainer with a host of friends, and, like many Henderson boys, when the Second World War erupted, he was anxious to defend his country. Pete was ambitious, and, after attending college for two years, he returned to Henderson to work at a service station. This made it possible for him to commute to the Evansville airport to take flight lessons in an attempt to increase his prospects of getting into the Air Corps.

Pete Theis had grown up in the South Green Street home of his parents, William J. and Sarah Theis. On March 1st, 1942, he was accepted into the service, and, in January 1943, he married a Dixon girl by the name of Martha Blackwell. He was transferred almost immediately to Santa Ana, California for preflight instruction. Of his physical training there, Theis wrote, “A cadet . . . is just a little worse off than a man in hell with his back broke,” but on May 20th, 1943 at Douglas Army Air Field in Arizona, he earned his long-awaited wings.

By September, Theis had returned with his bride to Douglas as a flight instructor. Just as Pete and Martha were preparing a life together in Arizona, though, tragedy struck. December 28th, 1943, three twin-engine airplanes, each containing a cadet and an instructor, went out on test flights in the nearby mountain ranges and did not return. That evening, a fourth plane disappeared. More than thirty search crews were sent out, and, 72 hours later, one of them found the body of 26-year-old Pete Theis. When his young wife returned to Henderson, she was escorting his body to St. Louis Cemetery. They would have celebrated their first wedding anniversary in a day or two.

Photo is of Pete Theis before the war.

Treasure trove of information for genealogists

If you are a beginning or long-time genealogist and have never visited the HeritageQuest website - don't wait any longer! HeritageQuest is a product of the ProQuest company (the company that provides Ancestry.com to libraries) and is free to anyone with a valid library card from the Henderson County Public Library.

This is a great website for searching census records, family books and much more. On a personal note, I had a major breakthrough in tracing my own family tree when I came across a family book in HeritageQuest that provided detailed information about my ancestors.

Many distinctive and invaluable sources of information can be found within HeritageQuest Online. This is a growing collection which at this time includes:
  • Genealogy & Local History Collection (Books) of over 20,000 book titles, including nearly 8,000 family histories and over 12,000 local histories, in addition to more than 250 primary source documents such as tax lists, city directories, church and probate records, and more;
  • 1790-1930 U.S. Federal Census with complete original images, plus many head-of-household name indexes;
  • Periodical Source Index (PERSI), a comprehensive subject index covering more than 6,300 genealogy and local history periodicals written in English and French (Canada) since 1800;
  • The Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files, which identifies more than 80,000 Americans who served in the war;
  • The Freedman’s Bank records (1865-1874) enables researchers of African American heritage to search registers of signatures of depositors in branches of the Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company; and
  • The Lexis Nexis® U.S. Serial Set contains House and Senate documents, such as Private Relief Actions, Memorials and Petitions from 1789-1969.

Each record in HeritageQuest is linked to the corresponding page images and is downloadable in Adobe PDF format. HeritageQuest also makes it easy to save, retrieve and take notes on your research through the Search History and Notebook features.

Take advantage of this valuable genealogy resource (by logging in from the library's website) either from home, on the road, or in the library during regular library hours. Read more or get started now. And don't forget to check out the library's genealogy page which is full of indexes and information related to Henderson families and local history.

Revisiting Henderson's Past: Death and the River

It's time to take a peek into the archives ...

Death and the River

“Strange, indeed is the working of love in the human heart. . .” Henderson Democratic Banner – August 19, 1852, on the deaths of the Misses Mintner.

Although the Ohio River has been a source of life for humans for hundreds of years, it has also, lamentably, been a cause of death for numerous unfortunate individuals. In fact, a search of the last 24 years in Henderson County Public Library’s obituary index produces 24 obituaries for people who have died as a result of encounters with the potentially deadly river, an average of one death per year within the region. The 1852 deaths of two young Henderson ladies were particularly difficult for the community.

According to the story, sisters Harriet Ann and Martha Carson Mintner, were loyally devoted to one another. One of the sisters, who had become enamored of a young Henderson man, had fallen victim to unrequited love and, thus, had decided to end her life. At sunrise on August 17, 1852, she induced her faithful sister to follow her to the banks of the Ohio River for a walk. When they arrived at the bank, she revealed her plan, a double suicide. The young girl readily consented to sacrifice her own life with her heartbroken sister’s, but, after their hands were bound together with a handkerchief and a plank was placed over the river, she panicked and began to protest. Witnesses claimed that it was too late, though, and the moonstruck girl pulled her into the violent deep. They died together.

Two days later, the following eulogy appeared in Henderson’s weekly newspaper, The Democratic Banner.

“We never knew them – they are now blest spirits of a holier, happier world – the lost Pleiades of a world of sorrow – the bright angels of Heaven. They were the children of sorrow and grief. This bright and beautiful world was a wilderness. They had looked upon man, and found him heartless and treacherous. They placed their bright eyes upon heaven, and saw that there was loveliness and purity. There, bright angels with their tiny hands beckoned them to come, and the music of the spheres harmonized with their sad destiny.”

Revisiting Henderson's Past: "Mad Dog" Irvin

It's time for another peek into the archives ...

Leslie "Mad Dog" Irvin

A horrifyingly graphic scene in Henderson County in 1955 caused a community-wide stir, as three people had been brutally murdered near Geneva in what The Gleaner described as “a bloody rampage by a maniacal killer.” A muddy nearby field yielded the bodies of a man and his twenty-year old son. Both had been bound, marched to their execution site, and shot in the backs of their heads with a 32-caliber automatic pistol. Three miles away, a young woman was found in a farmhouse bedroom, face-down on a bed. She was nude from the waist down, bound at the wrists with a lamp cord, and slaughtered in the same manner. A fourth victim, in an adjoining bedroom, managed to live, but was left permanently blind and handicapped by a shot to her temple.

The perpetrator was serial-killer Leslie Irvin, and the victims in this macabre spectacle were Goebel Duncan, 51, and his son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Mabel Duncan, 19. The living victim, Mr. Duncan’s wife, Mamie, had no recollection of the gory, traumatic incident, and a two-year-old little girl and her fifteen-hour-old baby sibling were parentless. Upon entering the house, police found the girl on the bed with her mother. Her explanation of her mother’s state was simply “Mommy is sleepy.” When later questioned as to why he had spared the child’s life, Irvin responded “I like kids.” Leslie Irvin had already killed three others within the tri-state area, and he was on the run.

Irvin was arrested in a Warrick County power plant on April 8th, 1955, and, on December 20th, he was convicted and scheduled to be executed on June 12th, 1956. He was quickly moved to an “inescapable” jail in Princeton, Indiana, where, just days before he was to be moved to Indiana State Prison, he shocked the public by escaping through three locked doors using two keys fashioned out of a paperback book cover, tin foil, and glue. In just twenty days, he was discovered in San Francisco, over 2,000 miles away. After a retrial, Irvin was sentenced to life in the Indiana State Prison, where he died of lung cancer in 1983.

Photo is of Leslie Irvin (center) and his two attorneys.

To read original newspaper articles describing Irvin’s crimes, capture, and trial visit us at the library. As always, you can also visit our genealogy page or read previous “Revisiting Henderson’s Past” entries. A special thanks goes to researcher Peggy Newton, who has presented her research on Leslie Irvin at Willard Library.
