The Genealogy Department has recently indexed and made available to the public a series of World War II scrapbooks compiled by Robert Stuart. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings from the Henderson Gleaner and Journal from approximately 1942 to 1946. Included in the scrapbooks are such items as: letters from the soldiers to their families in Henderson, news reports from the war about Henderson soldiers, death notices, and missing-in-action notices. While the contents of the scrapbooks are not online, you can browse the list of soldiers mentioned in the scrapbooks, and view the scrapbooks at the library.
Of particular interest to some people may be the letters written home to family members by the soldiers. A local woman found a letter from her father written to her mother telling her how proud he was of his new daughter that he had not yet seen. Her baby picture had been sent overseas and all of the soldiers shared in the joy of the birth of the new child. The woman did not know that the letter existed and was warmed to read about her father's emotions after her birth.
Maybe there's a letter from someone in your family!
