Sport a love of movies this April

Sports movies touch the hearts and souls of the audience in ways that so many other films cannot. One of the great things about sports movies is that they appeal to such a wide audience. They might be chick flicks like Fever Pitch or Stick It, inspirational like We Are Marshall or Coach Carter, comedies like Bad News Bears and The Longest Yard, or dramas like Million Dollar Baby and Friday Night Lights.

Whether it is a tale of the team of misfits who rise to win the championship, a story about how loving the same sport can bring two people together, or the recounting of the life of some our our greatest sports legends, not much can move an audience to their feet or to tears faster than a sports story. We have hundreds of movies that follow dozens of sports--golf, track and field, baseball, hockey, football, soccer, just to name a few--and we are giving them the spotlight this month on our movie display.

Spring into gardening

Spring has arrived and over the next few weeks we will see so many patrons come in with their eyes sparking and their minds full of dreams of long afternoons spent working in their beloved gardens. Green Thumbs, fear not, we are ready to meet your needs!

We are dedicating this month's display to gardening and lawn care. Some of our patrons spend weeks landscaping their backyards to transform it into the paradise of their dreams. Many of our patrons find no greater pleasure than eating zucchini and tomatoes fresh from their own vegetable gardens. Other patrons take great pride in the beautiful blooms that they nurse from their flower beds every season. We have all these passionate growers covered, regardless of what their garden plans might be this year. So whether you are an organic vegtable grower or can boast of the most beautiful roses in your neighborhood, please come down and see what our librarians have that can help your gardens grow.

Last minute tax filer?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, nearly 1 in 5 taxpayers wait until last minute to begin working on their tax returns. Whether you are one of those people who works best under pressure or someone who just hasn't been able to find the time, the library can help you get started when that time comes.
We have plenty of Federal and Kentucky tax forms in our reference department. We also have a master copy of the Indiana Non-Resident tax return packet for our patrons who work in Evansville or other Indiana towns. If we do not have the particular form you need in stock, any of our staff will be happy to find the form you need in our Master Book or at the IRS or Kentucky Revenue Cabinet websites.
We do not have a qualified accountant on our staff to help with tax returns, but our reference department holds several books that explain tax law changes and updates for our patrons who have questions about their returns, deductions, how tax law applies to them, etc. Patrons may also take advantage of the computers in our computer lab to use one of many fee-based online tax preparation programs available on the internet or to e-file their taxes for free on the IRS website.
So if you are one of the millions of Americans who have not even picked up their pencil and 1040, let us help you meet the April 17th filing deadline with our tax resources.
