Bond investment primer now available
Trillions of dollars flow through the global bond market every year. This increasingly popular market is heavily invested in for good reason: Bonds can provide stable income and diversification benefits. In such a dismal market, many investors are considering bonds. And we've created a new guide to help investors understand how bonds might work in their portfolios.
Our new Bond Primer covers everything from the very basics of bonds to expert analysis. The guide provides an explanation of what bonds are and how they work, the types of bonds available, the risks involved with investing in bonds, how to go about buying bonds, and how to select a bond mutual fund.
In addition, Morningstar Investment Research Center's fund screener can help investors find bond funds through a simple search, a process that is outlined in this guide. Also available in the Research Center are bond-fund reports and recommendations, provided by top Morningstar analysts.
This extensive bond guide can be found in the Help and Education section of Morningstar Investment Research Center. It joins a growing list of informative specialized investment primers that are provided to you by the Morningstar Library Services team.
For additional information on bonds, check out the Ibbotson SBBI data that was recently added to Morningstar Investment Research Center. To gain access to this data, simply visit the Industries section of the database and click on the link that is located on the lower left-hand corner of the page. The Ibbotson SBBI data will be updated yearly as it becomes available.
Morningstar Investment Research Center is great tool for new and veteran investors. It's chock full of unbiased analyst reports, tools for evaluating your portfolio, and lessons on how to invest. The best part is that it's free to all valid library cardholders! Begin now or learn more.

Best-kept secret: Henderson Obituary Index
The index grows daily and today it includes over 30,000 obituaries from 1981 to the present. Librarians are inputting data from the years 1979 and 1980. You can search by the decedent’s name, name of spouse, maiden name, names of survivors, date of death, place of death, and more. The obituary record will give you all of this information (if present in the obituary) along with the date that the obituary appeared in The Gleaner. In addition, any newspaper articles related to the death of an individual are listed in the obituary record (e.g. if the person was murdered, died in a car accident, etc.).
The library receives emails from across the country from genealogists who have searched the obituary index and found unknown relatives. Many times these researchers want to know if the library has any other information on their family members. Frequently the library will send copies of obituaries from The Gleaner to individuals (for a small fee). Our local residents use the service when they have forgotten or misplaced the death date of a friend, acquaintance or relative, or the names of the children of a friend who passed away. Local businesses also use the service to keep up with clients and customers.
The obituary index is one of the library’s most used online services. To access it, start here or visit our Genealogy page. For more information, please call the library at 270-826-3712 or contact our Genealogy Department.

New Year's Resolution: Learn about Investing
During the past few months it has been nearly impossible to avoid bad news about the financial markets. Even worse is trying to make investment decisions or discuss investment matters when you might feel rusty or out of step. No need to worry; Morningstar is here to help with our Investing Classroom.
Last month I began following the drama in the auto industry. I heard a lot about equity, liabilities, market capitalization, and the rest of the financial lingo. Rather than skip through the messy terms in the newspaper, I decided to take a refresher course so I could better understand the situation.
If you go to the Help and Education page of Morningstar Investment Research Center, you will find our Investing Classroom. There are courses on stocks, mutual funds, and portfolio analysis. The nice thing about Investing Classroom is that it can help anyone--from the novice to the expert. You will find course levels ranging from basic terms at the 100 level to derivatives and contemporary theories at the 500 level.
The Stocks module is great for anyone looking to get information on choosing stocks to invest in, or just to get an idea of the terminology surfacing in the news. It also includes information on how to calculate ratios, read financial statements, and much more. In the Funds catalog, you will find a plethora of information about how to examine and go about buying a mutual fund. You'll also learn the differences between specialized, growth, and value approaches, along with all the essentials of mutual fund investing.
In the current market, or any market for that matter, having the knowledge to make sound decisions about your investments is paramount. Investing Classroom teaches you how to determine the best kind of mix for you, strategies for buying and selling, and how to rebalance your portfolio. Hopefully you'll discover that even in a struggling market, there are investment opportunities out there.
Morningstar Investment Research Center is great tool for new and veteran investors. It's chock full of unbiased analyst reports, tools for evaluating your portfolio, and lessons on how to invest. The best part is that it's free to all valid library cardholders! Begin now or learn more.
