Genealogists: 1956 KY death certificates now available

For many people, a death certificate is a necessary evil, a symbol of life’s conclusion. But, did you know that death certificates can actually help you trace your genealogy, in addition to providing information on individuals in your family tree? With information like parents’ and spouses’ names, means of death, dates of death, and names of cemeteries, these records can equip you with the information you need to take your genealogical line back generations.

The state of Kentucky began issuing death certificates in 1911, and, here at the library, we have access to all certificates made available for public view, from their inception all the way up to the Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics’ latest release, 1956. As of this year, 1956 death records have been made accessible to those who pursue them. So, come today and inquire in our genealogy department, and see who you might find!

Unsure about how to get started on your family’s genealogy? Visit our genealogy page at http://www.hcpl.org/genealogy/genealogy.html.

October's investing tip from Morningstar.com

If You Don't Like Volatility, Read This

When the financial press and investors talk about roller coaster stock markets, the kind that make you queasy, they're talking about this year.

Not everyone is a fan of roller coasters. If you are looking for lower-risk fund choices, Morningstar Library Edition can help. Just look for the standard deviation number you'll find in our fund reports under Risk Measures.

Morningstar analysts like standard deviation because it tells investors just how much a fund's returns have fluctuated during a particular time period. We calculate standard deviations every month, based on a fund's monthly returns for the preceding three-, five-, and 10-year periods.

In and of itself, a fund's standard deviation doesn't mean much. It is significant only when compared with the standard deviations of other funds. For example, for whatever reason, an investor is torn between Vanguard Mid Capitalization Index VIMSX and JP Morgan Mid Cap Equity Select VSNGX. When you compare their standard deviations, you'll see that the standard deviation of the JP Morgan fund is just 8.75, much lower than Vanguard's 10.42. (Please note that the numbers in the database may be slightly different due to monthly recalculations.)

Here's another example. Let's say you would like to find the domestic-stock funds with the highest three-year returns and the lowest volatility. Go to the Morningstar Library Edition Fund Screener and search for all domestic-stock funds with three-year standard deviations less than their category averages also producing three-year returns greater than their category averages. As you can see, there are around 1,900 funds meeting your criteria out of a universe of nearly 11,000.

Of course, investors should base purchase decisions on more than just standard deviation. But for the risk-averse it's a good number to know--especially in a market like this year's.

Morningstar.com is great tool for new and veteran investors. It's chock full of unbiased analyst reports, tools for evaluating your portfolio, and lessons on how to invest. The best part is that it's free to all valid library cardholders! Begin now or learn more.

October is National Mystery Month

This month a lot of people's minds turn to the creepy crawlies and bumps in the night that come with Halloween. We here at the library are thinking about something else with more broad appeal--Mysteries!

If you haven't read a mystery in a while, you may be thinking that they are all the same and either have a Holmes-like British detective or a hard nosed male cop in a trench coat investigating murders that occurred on dark and stormy nights. But over the years, those two stereotypical detectives have had many other types of sleuths join their ranks. There is now a type of mystery for just about anyone.

For people who would just like a new take on the old tough as nails detective, they should try J.D. Robb, Sue Grafton, and Joe Konrath to meet three hard-boiled dames that hold their own alongside their male peers.

Animal lovers can find dog and cat capers in the pages of Laurien Berenson, Rita Mae Brown, Sue Henry, and Lilian Jackson Braun.

Foodies can bake their cakes and read them too in these recipe infused mysteries by G.A. McKevitt, Joanne Fluke, and Diane Mott Davidson.

People who love historical fiction can solve mysteries all through out history. They can travel to the ancient Roman Empire with Rosemary Rowe and John Maddox Roberts, medieval England with Kate Sedley and Michael Jecks, America during the Roaring Twenties with Jill Churchill, or New York City in the late 1800's with Rhys Bowen.

Even the literary types will not be left out in the cold. They can solve crimes with Jane Austen, O. Henry, and Geoffrey Chaucer.

Whatever your reading interests lean towards, there is a mystery somewhere that fits in with them, so stop by soon and start investigating our collection.
