Judge a book by its cover.

I am sure that many people read the title of this post and assumed it was a typo. The folly of judging a book by its cover is so firmly implanted in our brains that it is hard to believe that a library website would encourage anything else. But this timeless advice is not what our display is about this November. For the next 30 days, every patron of this library has a free pass to judge a book by its cover--or more specifically, the title on the cover.

The books on this month's list have been hand-selected by your librarians because they have had the power with just three or four well-chosen words to stop a browsing reader in his or her tracks. They are able to grab one's attention and curiosity with a witty hook and then reel the reader into the pages to find out what other clever words could be lurking under the cover.
Not sure if you feel right judging a book by its cover, yet? Glance at these titles and then tell me you're not just the slightest bit curious.

Play the ball where the monkey drops it
Teeth in a pickle jar
I dreamed I married Perry Mason
Revenge of the wrought-iron flamingos
Lipstick jihad
The ape and the sushi master
Don't eat this book
Quiche before dying

Henderson County and World War I

In 1918, the Kentucky Council of Defense inaugurated a state-wide movement to make a record of Kentucky's participation and role in the World War. It appointed a State War Historian and local historians in each county. These persons were charged with the duty of collecting and preserving such material as would be of value to the people of the counties and the state, including service records of the men in the army and navy, and records of the activities of the men and women who stood solidly behind the fighting forces and gave their time and labor untiringly to the winning of the war.

Henderson County's War Historian was Miss Virginia Lockett, chairman of the Henderson Woman's Club. Under the direction and supervision of the Kentucky Council of Defense, Miss Lockett compiled 5 volumes of information on Henderson residents involved in the war. These books were donated to the Henderson County Public Library in 1923. Copies of these books are available for browsing and research and a complete name index has been compiled by the Genealogy Department. Click here to see the index of names.

Scary Movies for October nights

October is here and everyone is getting ready for the scariest night, Halloween. Everywhere one can see ads for haunted houses and corn mazes. Ghosts, goblins, and witches peek out at passers by from windows, doorways, and lawns. Every child (and child at heart) is starting the search for the perfect costume. Nature itself is helping set the mood. Nightfall comes earlier every day and even the daylight isn't as strong as it was a few weeks ago.

Giving yourself the creeps is all part of the fun of this month and many people are dying to watch their favorite scary movies again. Rather than heading down to the video rental store this month, come and give our video display a try. We have scary movies for every taste--from alien invaders to monsters, from old school horror to the newest slasher flicks. If you aren't sure if we have something scary enough for you, take a look at some of these titles that are sitting on our shelves waiting to give you the shivers.

The others
A nightmare on Elm Street
Invasion of the body snatchers
Pet sematary
Rosemary's baby
What ever happened to Baby Jane?
The omen
Frankenstein : the legacy collection
Jacob's ladder
House of wax
Darkness falls
Saw II
The craft
Army of darkness

Great Books for Teens!

When I was about 13 or 14, I began to believe that reading things from the Children's Department was something I was "too old for". I began searching the Adult Department for books that would speak to me as a mature young woman, but had trouble finding them. I desparately wanted books for or about teenagers but (incorrectly) believed that they didn't exist.
Years have passed since my teens and I have overcome my Children's Department prejudices. I have learned where to look in both the Adult and Children's Department to find great books for teenagers. This month, with the help of some special teenaged advisors and Ms. Glenda, our children's librarian, I am hoping to shine a light on those corners of our collection with a display devoted entirely to Teen Reads. The week of October 15-21 is Teen Read Week, but we have entirely too many books that would appeal to our teenaged patrons to limit our display to only a week.

Here is just a sample of a few of the nearly 200 books on our list with the young adult stamp of approval!

All I want is everything : a Gossip Girl novel by Von Ziegesar, Cecily
Angus, thongs and full-frontal snogging : confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Rennison, Louise
Bad boy : a memoir by Myers, Walter Dean
Carrie by King, Stephen
The catcher in the rye by Salinger, J. D.
Crossing the wire by Hobbs, Will
The curious incident of the dog in the night-time by Haddon, Mark
Diary of a teenage girl : a novel by Carlson, Melody
Fat kid rules the world by Going, K. L.
The fire-eaters by Almond, David
Megan Meade's guide to the McGowan boys : a novel by Brian, Kate
Pedro and me : friendship, loss, and what I learned by Winick, Judd
Ptolemy's gate by Stroud, Jonathan
